Get to Know Mind Over Matter

Sensei Neil Linsdell, Head Instructor David Ip Yam, instructors and students of Mind Over Matter Karate School in North York, Toronto, ON.

Mind Over Matter Karate turns students into leaders of character capable of dealing with life's  mental and physical challenges and obstacles. Many of our students have gone on to join our team as instructors. This is the story of how Mind Over Matter Karate became what it is today and what you can expect when you join us.

How did you get started in karate?
Sensei Neil grew up in England. In his younger years he was a victim of bullying, and took up body-building as a teenager. However, after suffering a major injury at the age of 21, he found himself living an unhealthy lifestyle. His friends made fun of his weight, and as karate-ka, they challenged him to take a karate class thinking he wouldn’t last the whole class. He did take a karate class and found it so difficult that he vowed to never return. Sensei Neil didn’t intend on going to another class, until bumping into his Sensei in town one day – who then persuaded him to return. He’s been hooked ever since.

David Ip Yam was a student of Sensei Neil’s at the age of 10, as a method of self-defense against bullies. He describes himself as timid and unassertive as a child. His development since starting karate classes has been both physical and psychological. Due in large part to Sensei Neil’s coaching style and mentorship, he would go on to become a university administrator and leadership educator.

Why are you called Mind Over Matter?
We follow Kagami Shin Kai’s teachings, which is a combination of three of the main styles of karate. The moniker Mind Over Matter is inspired by the English translation of Kagami Shin in Japanese. Kagami, “mirror”, refers to when one looks into a mirror, one sees a reflection of oneself. In order to maintain a true reflection, one must consistently polish (or train) oneself to see their authentic spirit (Shin) in the mirror, which requires practicing with noble intention. Mind Over Matter recognizes that we can be our own worst enemy and refers to overcoming external and internal challenges to constantly improve yourself for the sake of personal development, not competition with others. We focus on training self-belief with effort and an open mind.

Why did you become instructors at Mind Over Matter?
Sensei Neil decided to take on the sensei role at Mind Over Matter Karate to pass on the value of fitness, confidence and a passion for karate. Since doing so, he’s really enjoyed watching new students arrive scared and shy, and soon build their confidence and creating lasting friendships.

David joined Sensei Neil’s school, immediately noticing a niche role model in Sensei Neil. Having since advanced to Head Instructor at Mind Over Matter, he too has watched students push their limits. The Mind Over Matter Team sees the difference karate can make in a person’s life. We give back to the community to bring these true underdog stories to life.

What kind of changes do you see in your students?
Many memorable moments happen during Mind Over Matter Karate classes. We’ve seen students resolve mobility issues through their practice. We’ve seen students enrol at a young age, and commit themselves to their craft – going on to teach their own classes as teenagers. Generally we notice a huge difference in students’ attitudes as they advance through the belts. They are better able to defend themselves, and feel more confident facing daunting high-pressure situations.

What sets Mind Over Matter apart from other karate schools?
Pybus Sensei originally started Mind Over Matter Karate in 1968, and had never had a female student. In 2010, Iliana Sergeev would go on to become the first female black belt at Mind Over Matter, and is now one of the main instructors. This narrative is what sets Mind Over Matter apart. We produce leaders, and teach our students how to teach. Our advanced students construct their own routines and take over Sensei Neil’s class for a day. We believe that a true martial artist knows how to pass on their knowledge.

Why should you join Mind Over Matter?
If you want to learn a martial art to improve your self defense abilities while building character strengths and leadership skills, this is the place for you. We’re a down-to-earth niche community. We’re student-centred, and personable so we can get to know you and support you as best as we can.
